Adequately describes some aspects of driving cab in Hamilton. Contains some innaccuracies as in

"Horning rushes down to the mall, clicks on the radio and tells the dispatcher he's on his way to Centre Mall. It's called jumping, as in, the driver jumps to the next office to get the call. "

Actually, "jumping" is literally "jumping the queue", by pretending to be in a "sub station" when it is called. This can have mixed results. If there is a car actually waiting in the called sub, or if other drivers opt to "jump" at the same time, the attempt is unsuccessful.

There are varying degrees of expertise in "jumping". Some drivers use the shotgun approach, answering at any time they hear a sub called, regardless of whether they have any realistic expectation that the sub is empty. More often than not, this merely causes added confusion and stress.

A more "surgical" approach is taken by some drivers... keeping a close mental record of which subs were recently called and whether or not a reply was returned. The surgical jumper takes advantage of this information to ply his trade as transparently as possible. A good surgical jumper can often earn twice the income (or more) of the "hurry up and wait" driver. Depending upon the disposition of the dispatcher, this can turn into quite a game of "cat and mouse" transforning an otherwise insufferable "hurry up and wait" ordeal into one hell of a sport. Having played the game once or twice I recall waking up some mornings, after a particularly intense game, with numerous "instant replays" reverberating in through my mind.
