Anti-Capitalistic MythsYou show me a capitalist, I'll show you a bloodsucker.Anti-Capitalism Myths Demolished! Myth: Children are exploited under Capitalism One common objection to personal liberty and it's economic corollary, a regime of Laissez-faire capitalism, is that there could be no laws prohibiting child labour. The assumption is that child labour is such a terrible thing that tolerating it is simply inconceivable. This is, of course, pure nonsense. Depending on the economic conditions at any given place and/or time child labour can mean the difference between life and death. Laws which prohibit child labour in such a matrix effectively sentence their victims to death. Myth: Without aggression funded ( ie: government ) schools only the rich would get an education. According to Louis Rukeyser's Business Almanac, (Copyright 1991,1988), about $377.8 billion dollars was spent for education in America's schools. A few pages later Rukeyser mentions a 1986 study by the U.S. Department of Commerce which "found that some 17 million Americans, or about 13% of adults, were illiterate." Hmmmm. Back in 1850 the census reported about 20 percent illiteracy amongst adult southern whites, only 3% in the middle states and as low as 1% in New England. Things haven't changed much have they? In fact, looking at the literacy rates in the north before the states and federal governments got heavily involved in education suggests things have indeed gotten worse! So why is the government still playing such a large role in education? Do we really need government schools?
Child Labor and the Industrial Revolution
by Clark Nardinelli takes another look at child labour during the industrial revolution and concludes that it was not the scourge that the myth would have us believe.
