Job 6Summer 1974 Stelco Inc.I guess some of the work ethic my father had tried to instill in me had actually taken root in some small way. I was still living in the rock commune when I visited the unemployment office and was directed to the Stelco Parkdale Works where they were hiring wire drawers. I got the job because I knew how to read a micrometer. The pay was around $4.69 per hour. It turned out I was some sorry-assed candidate for the career of wire drawing. At the dopey age of 18 I was not a person who should be working around the kind of equipment used in this enterprise. To make things even worse, the guy who was supposed to be "training" me used the opportunity instead to socialize with other employees around the plant. I was often left alone operating three machines which, though I did not realize initially, could have easily left me in a state of amputation or decapitation. During one particular night shift I managed to escape severe injury or death by a mere distraction. When I left the plant that morning I resolved my career as a wire drawer had run it's course. Time on the job - 6 weeks. Joe Schlockenblock explains, How find a job and Get off Welfare.
