Job 2circa 1966-1968 SalesmanThere used to be ads in the comic books enticing young people like me to sign up and sell "All Occasion Cards." I kept bugging my mother to let me sell these things until she finally relented. I think I had to sell about 12 boxes of these cards in the first shipment. My first three sales were a piece of cake.... one to my mother and two to the closest neighbours. Those were the only easy sales I ever made. After knocking on about a hundred doors and saying, "Wanna buy some All Occasion Cards?" I realized I had to change my approach. I learned a thing or two about sales over the next few weeks. I changed my pitch from "Wanna buy some All Occasion Cards?" to "Good afternoon Madam or Sir, would you like to take a moment to look at these beautiful All Occasion Cards?" With a beaming smile I was learning the first thing about sales... how to bullshit people. After a while I also started to notice that if a man answered the door there was about zero chance of a sale. I think all of my sales went to women. Once I finally got rid of those cards I decided my sales career had run it's course. All Occasion Cards.... I wonder if anyone ever ended up actually using them. Around the same time I also tried snow shovelling. I did a few driveways here and there after which I pretty much lost interest in any kind of work for the next twenty years. But I still had to work... Joe Schlockenblock explains, How find a job and Get off Welfare.
