Government Bullshit Award

The Uncle Block Government Bullshit Award for January 2005 goes out to Health Canada for it's stunning demonstration of the truth of Adolf Hitler's statement, "What good fortune for governments that the people do not think."

Has anyone noticed how Heather Crowe seemed to disappear from the TV anti-smoking ads for a while but has only recently returned with a vengeance? Well, I guess she's still alive!

I dunno, but every time that ad comes on the tube I want to vomit. What crass manipulation it represents. Especially her claim that she has a "smoker's tumor". What exactly is that?

This morning I did some searching and found this page which has an interesting take on the Heather Crowe BS. I think the author has some very good insights into how manipulation of the masses is carried on in this country...

Think of this article the next time you drive by some bar or restaurant that has recently gone out of business because of some new anti-smoking law. People who have lost their businesses and jobs as a result of this hysteria represent real victims of clearly identifiable causes, something I would call "big government tumor."

I thought about it this morning while reading the Hamilton Spectator article titled, "Charities make play for bingo hall slots". Much of the blame for a precipitous drop in bingo revenues is put on casinos but the article also quotes Stephen Kirkland, Ontario manager of gaming operations for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind who says, "Smoking bylaws are coming into effect, gravely affecting attendance at these halls," (emphasis mine).

Lung Association area manager Josie Ruggiero is quoted as saying, "declining attendance and revenues at the former Bingo Country made her drop bingo fundraising for two years. Her annual bingo earnings fell from $80,000 to $20,000 over several years." Poetic justice? Recall that the Lung Association is a big supporter of the partial private property expropriation currently running rampant as an excuse for "protecting" workers and others from the alleged evils of second hand smoke.

So what's going on with Heather Crowe? The geocities link above says her cancer went into remission. I am guessing now that, if this were true, the ads were pulled. Perhaps now that they are back on the air in full force, her cancer may have come back. Interesting.
